W is for Winter in NYC

Let me remind everyone that I grew up in middle Georgia. For 24 years I lived through winters where I would sometimes wear a heavy jacket (not a coat...a jacket) and occasionally have to scrape some ice off my windshield before I could drive anywhere. I can remember having one blizzard when I was little and then every once in a while we'd get a snow flurry. That's pretty much it.

NYC winters are SO DIFFERENT. Y'all, this little Georgia girl had to quickly acquaint herself with coats, scarves (there are so many different ways to wear them!), hats, gloves, thick socks, long underwear...it was all so foreign! Earmuffs are what I have discovered I can't live without - cold ears are absolutely the worst. And guess what? You wear rain boots and carry umbrellas for snow, not just rain!

We went home to Georgia for our first Christmas and when we came back, we drove back along with my sister and brother-in-law. That was the night of the biggest blizzard we've had since moving here - we ended up getting stuck on the interstate and having to sleep there until morning. Not on the side of the interstate...we were stuck on the lane we had been driving in. And we had no heat because we had to reserve the gas. It was crazy.

I will say though that I love NYC winters. It helps that I don't have to worry about shoveling any of it and sometimes the snow lets me go home early and get an entire day off. I also prefer being cold to being hot, so this whole winter lasting into spring is totally working for me. :-)

What are winters like where you are? Do you love or hate them?

  1. Mostly love. But the lack of sunshine gets to me after a bit. And the constant darkness makes me feel tired all day. But there's something magical when watching snow fall and you're safe in your home nice and toasty.

  3. Hey GA girl!
    Visiting from AtoZ.
I'm a military brat, so we moved all over...my parents lived in GA for a few years. Now I'm in south TX. I used to miss winter, but these days if the temp drops below 60, I'm freezing! lol..would never make it in NYC!

  5. Very rarely do we get snow in the area of Oregon that I call home. We get ice and a LOT of rain in the winter. But, like you, I much prefer being cold to being hot. My theory: you can always put more clothes on...you can only take so much off ;)

  7. Winters usually mean lots of snow here in Minnesota. I generally love the snow, just hate the windchills when it feels like 20 below zero. I also am not wild about winters that drag on into spring, like they have this year. The 6" of snow we received last weekend is just starting to melt away. :/

I will say that one of my daughter's bucket list items is to be in New York at Christmas time. I think the movie Elf had something to do with that, but she imagines that it is just magical there.

  9. Hi, back in the south in South Carolina. We had a great winter and even had snow flakes. In Greenville, they had several weekends of snow. Our spring has been great too, cool and pretty. Hope the summer is cooler than average too. Glad to meet another Southern gal. I am visiting from A to Z.

  10. Growing up in DC, snow was like a "get out of jail" free card. So I loved it. Then I moved to CT. Wow!! Seriously, WOW! I'm back in DC now and I've noticed that the snow doesn't phase me. If it snows, I shovel and drink hot chocolate. In the Summer I plant flowers and drink iced tea. I guess I just love all the seasons and what they bring!

  11. I grew up in British Columbia, and we always had lots of snow. I remember going out before morning recess to make sure the outdoor ice rink would be good to go for noon hockey! Crazy cold. Now I live in Washington state and I was snow so badly and some winters we get it, some winters we don't.

Your interstate adventure sounds amazing. Crazy, but amazing.

I would like to experience NYC at Christmas, like one of the commenters above--not because of Elf, but for the tree in Rockefeller and the general holiday vibe, which I have romanticized, of course!
